What is a picosecond laser?

A picosecond laser shortens each pulse to the trillionth-of-a-second range. At that speed the dominant effect shifts from heat (photothermal) to a rapid pressure wave (photoacoustic) that fractures pigment into ultra-fine dust — which the lymphatic system clears more completely than the larger fragments left by older nanosecond (Q-switched) lasers.

Picosecond pulses can limit thermal spread compared with longer pulses, but they are not automatically risk-free. In pigment-prone Asian skin, wavelength, fluence, diagnosis and aftercare still determine the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or melasma rebound.

Acne scars and enlarged pores need scar-type assessment

Pico Majesty's Fractional MLA concentrates energy into microscopic points, creating a photoacoustic tissue response that supports gradual collagen remodelling without ablating the entire skin surface. It may suit selected shallow atrophic scars, rough texture and enlarged pores, with redness or swelling varying by settings.

Pico does not release every tethered scar or rebuild every deep ice-pick scar. Rolling scars with fibrous bands may need subcision, while deep or mixed scars may require a combination plan. The realistic goal is softer edges and more even texture, not perfectly poreless skin.

Post-acne marks, melasma, freckles and sun spots need different plans

Post-acne dark marks follow inflammation and may be treated as part of a pigment and tone-evening plan. Melasma is chronic and more reactive, so Pico is considered only within a gentle combined plan that includes topical care and photoprotection. Brightening means reducing excess pigment and improving visual tone; it does not change a person's natural skin colour.

Freckles are often small inherited spots that deepen with sun exposure, while solar lentigines are more defined spots related to accumulated UV exposure. Targeted treatment may be considered after the doctor excludes lesions that should not be lasered.

Targeted spots may temporarily darken or form fine crusts before fading. Picking crusts, aggressive skincare and unprotected sun exposure increase the risk of PIH, especially in Asian skin.

On the day and afterwards

After cleansing, the doctor passes the laser handpiece over the area; you feel a light snapping sensation and warmth. A session is short — often 15–30 minutes — and energy is set to your skin type and concern.

Mild redness for a few hours is normal; targeted dark spots may form a fine "coffee-ground" crust that flakes off within days. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 50 is essential to protect results.

When changes may appear

Acne-scar edges, texture and the appearance of pores improve gradually as collagen remodels, and deeper scars may need combination treatment. Freckles, sun spots and post-acne marks may fade over a targeted series, while melasma requires gentler ongoing control; Hori Clinic may plan about 6–9 low-energy sessions when suitable. Consistent photoprotection remains essential because pigment can return.
