Sculptra collagen biostimulator — Hori Clinic Bangkok

Quick answer

Sculptra: what to know first

Sculptra is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid collagen biostimulator designed for gradual change rather than immediate filler-like correction. It may suit selected diffuse volume loss or loss of firmness, but it cannot be dissolved like hyaluronic-acid filler and requires conservative medical planning.

Suitable for
Selected diffuse volume loss or reduced firmness when gradual change is acceptable
Discuss first
Discuss pregnancy or breastfeeding, infection, medicines, previous injectables and abnormal scarring history
Discomfort
Needle or cannula pressure and stinging; anaesthetic may reduce discomfort
Downtime
Swelling, redness, bruising or tenderness can occur; delayed lumps require medical review
When change may be noticed
Change develops over weeks to months; the number and spacing of sessions are individual
Alternatives
Hyaluronic-acid filler, another biostimulator, energy-based devices or surgery may be more appropriate

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) — the same biocompatible polymer used in dissolvable surgical sutures. It is not a conventional filler. Once injected into the deep dermis and massaged out, the PLLA microparticles set off a controlled, low-grade repair response in which your own fibroblasts gradually deposit new type-I collagen along the treated planes.

Because the result is your own collagen, the change is slow and natural — subtle firming and restored volume that build over weeks across a short series of sessions, usually spaced about a month apart, and can last up to around two years. Sculptra suits broad, structural volume loss rather than a single sharply-defined line.

How it works

01

PLLA microparticles are injected into the deep dermis and subcutis.

02

They prompt a controlled fibroblast response that produces new type-I collagen.

03

Volume and firmness build gradually over 2–3 months and can last up to ~2 years.

Why it may help

Why Sculptra

  • Restores volume gradually for a natural look
  • Stimulates your own collagen, not just fills
  • Improves overall firmness across a region
  • Long-lasting — results can last up to ~2 years

A doctor may consider it for

  • Generalised volume loss or hollowing
  • Early sagging and loss of facial support
  • Prefer a gradual, undetectable change
  • Want a collagen-based, long-lasting result

On the day and afterwards

Sculptra is reconstituted and injected into the deep dermis or subcutis across the area, often followed by massage. A session takes about 30–45 minutes. Because it is a biostimulator, a series of sessions spaced weeks apart is usually planned.

Mild swelling, redness or small bruises can occur briefly. Gentle massage of the area as advised by your doctor helps even distribution. Most people resume normal activities the same day.

When changes may appear

Results are intentionally gradual: as PLLA stimulates new type-I collagen, volume and firmness build over 2–3 months and can last up to around two years, after which a touch-up maintains the effect.

Everyone responds differently. Before treatment, your doctor will examine the area and talk through a plan that makes sense for you.

Sculptra, answered.

Is Sculptra a filler?+

Not in the usual sense. Rather than instantly filling, it is a biostimulator that prompts your skin to rebuild its own collagen for a gradual, natural result.

When will I see results?+

Gradually over 2–3 months as new collagen forms, not immediately — which is what makes the change look natural.

How long does it last?+

Results can last up to around two years; periodic maintenance preserves them.

Before you decide

A few things to know about Sculptra (PLLA)

We last reviewed these sources on 23 July 2026. They can help you prepare for a consultation, but they cannot replace an examination or a consent discussion with your doctor.

What the evidence says

PLLA studies report gradual changes in volume and skin quality, but a systematic review judged the evidence for facial rejuvenation to be low quality, with several trials at high risk of bias.

Risks worth discussing

Bruising, tenderness, swelling and nodules can occur. Preparation, placement and aftercare are product- and technique-specific; outcomes are not immediate or guaranteed.

Tell us before you book

  • Ask which exact product or device will be used and where.
  • Tell us about medicines, allergies, pregnancy, medical conditions and recent procedures.
  • Ask about alternatives, recovery and warning signs.
